5 Reasons Why You Should Plant Zinnias (Especially in Minnesota)

There’s something about flowers that feels like a quiet invitation. Not loud. Not demanding.

Just… come try.

Last year, I said yes to that invitation.

For my birthday, I asked my husband to clear me a

5’ x 25’ garden bed just for zinnias. It felt big to me. Bigger than anything I had done before. I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to flowers, so this felt like stepping into something new. Something I wasn’t fully sure I knew how to do.

He cleared it with the bobcat, and we brought in the cleanest compost we could find. We spread about 3 inches of compost across the entire bed.

I had just started to learn about the importance of having your soil covered. So we layered something unexpected on top.

Our soiled chicken bedding. About an inch of wood shavings mixed with chicken waste. It felt a little unconventional, but also right. We let it sit there for about four weeks… soaking, settling, becoming something better than what it was.

When the frost had finally passed here in Zone 4 Minnesota, I went out with my seeds.

I planted what felt like hundreds.

Row by row, about 7 inches apart. Seeds about 6 inches from each other. No ruler. Just instinct and hope. And when they began to grow—tall, stretching, full—I was so grateful I had given them space.

The first time I saw those tiny leaves break through the soil… I felt so proud!

I could not wait to share these with family and friends!

I only watered them for the first week. After that, the rain came just when it needed to. I maybe watered once or twice toward the end of summer when things got dry.

And that was it. Simple.

Maintenance was light. The mulch helped keep the weeds away, so every couple of weeks, when I went out to cut flowers, I would spend a little time weeding.

And honestly… I loved it.

It became this slow, grounding rhythm. Listening to the bees. Watching the butterflies. Letting my thoughts quiet down. There’s something about having your hands in the soil that steadies you. I always walked away feeling more like myself.

I bought my seeds from Tractor Supply Company and chose a mix of bright, cheerful varieties. I wanted color. I wanted life. I wanted a little surprise every time something bloomed.

And that’s exactly what I got.

That Zinnia patch brought me so much joy.

I hosted friends for tea and dessert and let them pick their own bouquets. Watching someone gather flowers you grew… it does something to you. It feels full. It feels meaningful.

And I couldn’t help but think— Maybe you’d love this too.

5 Reasons Why You Should Plant Zinnias
  • Zinnias don’t ask for perfection. They’re forgiving. They meet you where you are and grow with you.

  • No two blooms feel exactly the same. Every morning feels a little different when you walk out to see what opened overnight.

  • Your garden won’t feel empty. It will hum. Bees, butterflies, life moving all around you.

  • You’ll start cutting a few… and then it becomes a rhythm. A gift you get to give over and over again.

  • Once they’re in, they grow. They don’t demand much but they give a lot.

If you’ve been thinking about starting…

This might be your sign.

Start small.
Start simple.
Start with zinnias.

And see what grows. 🌿
