Country Home & Beverage Station

As you pull up to this home, you are met by a dreamy scene.

To your right is the sweetest barn, clad with white shake siding. Around the perimeter of the property is traditional farm fencing, giving it that I’m in the country feeling. There are donkeys, goats, and chickens that give life to the landscape.

So, with all this love for nature and animals, and the backdrop of a beautiful country home… how could we add a new bar area without making it feel new, but instead full of depth and complementary to everything else around it?

Well, I proposed painting a landscape scene above the bar area. Then, when we found the right countertop, I knew what I had originally in mind would not be the ultimate look I was hoping to achieve. So I spent a couple of hours searching for moody tree scenes that would go with the existing color scheme.

I ordered the first bit of wallpaper to go above the bar and up to the ceiling. Then I could not stop thinking about the fact that we should wrap the other two walls in this little breakfast area in wallpaper as well, to make it look and feel like its own room instead of just painting those walls. I was not too keen on making the wallpaper feel like an accent wall. In my mind, it was about the movement, and it could only be the full moment if it wrapped around the space.

I was nervous to propose this idea to my client, because what if they didn’t like it? But also because I had already ordered the first bit of wallpaper, and all the walls were different heights due to the slant of the roof. With a little math and a very talented installer, we were able to make it happen.

This is what we started with — we knew for sure we were going to do walnut inset cabinets with aged hardware. We also knew we wanted walnut live-edge shelves with a clear coat to complement the countertops.

For the walnut shelves, I went to a local vendor and picked out a live-edge walnut slab he had recently dried. I had him cut it down so it could somehow fit in my car, and from there it made its way to our team, who expertly finished the shelves and installed them. It’s always fun when a piece has a little journey before it becomes part of a home.

After visiting a couple of showrooms, we narrowed down the perfect quartzite slab at Astonia in Rogers.

I swear this piece was set aside for my clients.

It was perfect — the colors, the absolute depth of it — it all played together so beautifully. We had always planned on doing a tall backsplash with a small quartz ledge, and this slab confirmed our choice.

Lastly, because lighting is everything, I had found these two gorgeous wood sconces with tall shades in a deep green that would accent the wallpaper without taking away from it. Only to figure out on the day of install that I had not checked to see if they were UL listed. Of course, they were not, so we had to scramble to find new lights. Thankfully, our clients found these two amazing brass pieces at a showroom and were able to purchase them right away.

Ultimately, I think it was the right touch. The brass finish of the sconces adds a touch of warmth to the otherwise cool palette.

I’m obsessed and proud of this finished look and design. I hope you enjoy looking at these images as much as we did bringing it to life.
